"What we see changes what we know. What we know changes what we see." Jean Piaget
Robert is an internationally recognised, award‑winning artist whose watercolour practice is centred on an intensive exploration of plant form, light, and colour. His work is characterised by a sustained commitment to close observation and a painterly process that prioritises visual enquiry over representational certainty.
An elected member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), Robert has developed a distinctive visual language through years of focused engagement with natural subjects. His practice involves interrogating form through the modulation of light and colour, allowing the structural and dynamic qualities of plant life to emerge through the painting process itself.
Patience and precision are fundamental to his methodology. Meticulous attention to detail, combined with a nuanced understanding of colour interaction, has become a defining aspect of his work. Although the resulting images often appear highly resolved, realism is not the primary objective; rather, it arises as a consequence of sustained perceptual investigation.
“My paintings can only ever be an approximation of what I perceive — an arrangement of colour relationships that creates an illusion of reality on a flat substrate.”
Robert is currently collaborating with his wife, Fiona Strickland RSW, on a long‑term project examining local habitats and the ecosystems that support plant life. Their shared practice reflects a mutual commitment to sustained observation and to the artistic interpretation of biodiversity, situating their work within a broader dialogue around ecology, attention, and place.
